ISLE OF SKYE

Skye is one of the Jewels in Scotland’s tourism crown.  Steeped in history Skye is a must see destination for anyone visiting Scotland.  Located in the Inner Hebrides, Skye is a vast island covering some 1,656 square kilometres.

There is much to see and do in Skye.

The Ardvasar Hotel is located at the Southern tip of the Island within the Sleat Peninsula.  This part of the island is often referred to as the Garden of Skye due to its lush vegetation. The climate is considerably more hospitable here than the somewhat barren landscape found in the north of the Island.

The village of Ardvasar is located just south of the ferry terminal at Armadale.  A small, peaceful village, the hotel commands a prime position overlooking the sea.  Within the village there is a shop and post office.

Things to do/Local Attractions

There is much to see and do on the Isle of Skye.  Located within the Sleat peninsula, we would recommend the following:

Armadale Castle and the Museum of the Isles

A short drive or a 10 minute walk from the hotel.  This is one of Skye’s most

popular visitor attractions.  For those interested in history and genealogy the museum is well worth a visit. There is also an excellent library for those seeking to research their family history.  The gardens are stunning and there are many walks and trails within and nearby the castle grounds.

Sea Fari Boat Trips

Located at Armadale Pier, Sea Fari adventures offer daily trips throughout the season. Extremely popular with adults and children, this is a great opportunity to see wildlife at close quarters.  Whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals and numerous birds can all be part of the Sea-Fari experience.

A walk to the Point of Sleat

Beyond the village of Ardvasar, the single track road continues for another three miles leading to Aird and the southern end of the Sleat peninsula.  From here there is a two mile track to the Point of Sleat. This is a beautiful walk where on clear days you get excellent views of the small isles, in particular Rhum and Egg.

A drive to Tarskavaig & Ord

Just 2.5 miles to the north of Ardvasar, turning left at Ostaig takes you onto the single track road which leads to Tarskavaig and Ord.  There is a sandy beach at Tarskavaig and  beyond this at Tokavaig are the ruins of Dunsgaith Castle.  The road then loops round to Ord and then leads back onto the A851.  In the long summer evenings this remote western part of the Sleat peninsula can be quite spectacular with the sun setting behind the infamous Cuillin mountain range.

Armadale Pier

A short walk from the hotel is Armadale Pier, where the ferry from Mallaig arrives.  For those seeking gifts and souvenirs we would recommend a visit to Ragamuffin, Skyelark, The Bay Pottery and Nigel Grounds Art Gallery.
